Norman E. Baker

Waltham – Mr. Norman E. Baker, Sr., of Waltham, died Friday, December 2, 2016 at Wayside Hospice in Wayland. He was 88.

Norman was born in Gloversville, New York on February 11, 1928, a son of the late Ernest W. and Clara B. (Rose) Baker. He was raised in upstate New York and joined the United States Navy at the tail end of World War II.

While Norman was in the service he married his sweetheart, Esther M. Simpson, in Washington state and after his discharge in 1949 the couple moved to Portland, Oregon.

Following a move to Watertown in 1997 the pair made their home in Waltham in 1999. Before that they lived for several years in Colorado and for more than twenty years in Florida.

Norman was a terrific cook and spent his entire career as a baker in commercial bakeries in Florida and with smaller operations locally. Lasagna for dinner and coffee cake at any time were his specialties. He worked most recently for Walgreen's in Waltham retiring when he was eighty-four.

He collected coins and stamps and model trains; loved the sound of the 'Big Bands' and was devoted to his Christian faith. Norman was a longtime member of Hope International Church in Waltham.

Norman and Esther enjoyed sixty-six years together before her death in August, 2014.

He leaves his children, Christine M. Cruz of Waltham and Norman E. Baker, Jr., and his wife, Mary Alice, of Belton, Missouri; his grandchildren, Luis Cruz, Norman Baker, III, Neil Baker, Amy Gillespie and Stephen Baker; his great-grandchildren, Caleb, Emily, Benjamin, Samantha, Jackson, Timothy, Matthew, Jacob, Damian, Tristan, Alyssa, Logan and Colton and many nieces and nephews.

Norman was also the brother of the late Esther Danforth and Mary Alice Baker.

Family and friends will honor and remember Norman's life by gathering to visit at 10 a.m. on Thursday, December 8th in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham where his funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at 2:15 p.m. in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
