Norman H. Poirier

Waltham – Mr. Norman H. Poirier, of Waltham, died Monday, January 12, 2015 in the E. N. Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford surrounded by family. He was 86.

Norman was born in Waltham on December 13, 1928, a son of the late Henry and Eva (Allain) Poirier and had been a lifelong resident. At the end of World War II he served with the United States Army Air Force in the Pacific.

Following his time in the service he opened 'Poirier's Texaco' gas station at the corner of Main Street and Waverly Avenue in Watertown and later operated the Shell Station on the other side of Watertown Square. After that Norm became the Director of Public Vehicles for the City of Waltham. Following his retirement from the city he worked for another seventeen years in the transportation department at Regis College in Weston.

A longtime member of the Masons he belonged to the Waltham Triad Lodge, A.F. & A.M., where he was a Past Master. Norm was also a member of Trinity Church, formerly First Congregational Church, on Main Street.

Norm loved camping and traveling across New England and across the country in his RV where he indulged his passion for fishing and creating countless happy memories with family and friends. He maintained a site at the Red Apple Campground in Kennebunk, Maine and was a member of Chapters 11, 61 and 68 of the Holiday Ramblers Club.

He leaves his beloved wife of sixty-eight years, Joan D. (Higgins) Poirier; his children, Paula J. Porter and her husband, Roy, of Sudbury, (Ret.) Lieut. Col. William H. Poirier, USA and his wife, Anne, of Murfreesboro, Tennessee and (Ret.) Waltham Firefighter Norman P. 'Chip' Poirier and his companion, Kris Watson, of Fitchburg; his brother Paul Poirier of Cochituate; his grandchildren, Carol J. Capone, Christine E. Boyd, Amy J. Snow, Elizabeth A. Porter, Sharra A. Shotwell, Garren S. Poirier, Taylor L. Brown, McKenzie J. Witherspoon, Reilly L. Poirier, Norman P. Poirier, Jr., Apryle M. Phipps and Colleen J. Ayres; his great-grandchildren, Jacquelyn Capone, Courtney Mae Capone, Ashley Capone, Meagan Capone, Thomas Boyd, Lauren Boyd, Daniel Boyd, Hannah Snow, Brooklyn Porter, Calla Shotwell, Grady Shotwell, McKenna Shotwell, Caizley Witherspoon, Easten Brown, Tyler Poirier, Trevor Phipps, Lillian Ayres, Leilani Ayres, Adrianna Poirier and Griffin Poirier; his great-great grandson, Connor Capone and many nieces and nephews.

He was also the great-grandfather of the late Justin Robert Capone and brother of the late Roger Poirier.

Family and friends will honor and remember Norman's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), WALTHAM on Friday, January 16, from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 p.m. with a Masonic Service at 7 p.m. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday morning in Trinity Church, 730 Main St., Waltham at 10 a.m. Burial will be private.
