Omer J. Leger

Mr. Omer J. Leger, of Waltham, died Wednesday, April 24, 2024 at Waltham Crossings.  He was 89.

Omer was born on January 3, 1935 in Cocagne, New Brunswick, a son of the late Albert and Lina Leger, and moved to the States in 1959.  In May, 1960 he married Theresa C. Gautreau, a native of Memramcook, New Brunswick and the couple made Waltham their lifelong home. Omer and Theresa enjoyed fifty-nine happy years together before Theresa’s death in July, 2019. For years they enjoyed annual summer trips ‘home’ to New Brunswick to visit family and friends.

Until his retirement Omer worked as a custodian at Weston High School and before that worked for years at Paul’s Auto Body in Waltham.  He had a lifelong love of cars, and although he was a ‘Ford guy’, he could make any make or model look showroom new.

Following retirement he took up golf and thoroughly enjoyed the game.  He achieved a hole-in-one during one of his rounds. His favorite course was Leo J. Martin in Weston where Omer and his buddies would play at least weekly.

Omer will long be remembered for his compassionate heart and love for animals of every variety. He was a terrific story teller to all the kids and thoroughly enjoyed rocking the babies in the family to sleep.  

In addition to his beloved wife, Theresa, and his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Dorilla Belliveau and Albertine Cormier (late Adelard).

He leaves his children, Francis J. Leger (Deborah) of Marlborough, Mona McGean (David) and Guy J. Leger (Lisa), all of Waltham; his grandchildren, Sean Leger (Ashley Kalakowski), Ashley Compass (Steve), Daniel McGean and Adam McGean; his great-grandchildren, Chase, Mackenzie and Charlotte Compass; his sister, Juliette LeBlanc (late Joe) of New Brunswick and many nieces, nephews and their families including his Godchild, Francine Belliveau.

Family and friends will honor and remember Omer’s life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Monday, April 29^th from 4 to 7 p.m. and again at 10 a.m. on Tuesday morning before leaving in procession to Sacred Heart Church, 311 River Street, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial will be private.
