Waltham – Mr. Patrick J. 'Buddy' O'Connell, Jr., of Waltham, died Sunday, June 11, 2017 in the E.N. Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford. He was 90.
Buddy was born in Waltham on September 7, 1926, a son of the late Patrick J. and Margaret Josephine (Walsh) O'Connell and had been a lifelong resident.
Following his service in the United States Navy during World War II he went to work at the Waltham Watch Factory for a time before coming to work for the City of Waltham. For years he ran the city's incinerator and after it closed worked as a foreman in the public works department until his retirement.
Buddy had been a former member of Elks Lodge No. 953 and V.F.W. Post 2152, both in Waltham.
He leaves his wife, Grace A. (Lerette) O'Connell; his children, Paul J. O'Connell and his wife, Isabelle, of Pepperell, Donald P. O'Connell and his wife, Sandra, of Stow, Joanne E. Mickens of Waltham and Therese M. Willstaedt and her husband, Eric, of Frederick, Maryland; his brother, Joseph O'Connell of Waltham; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Buddy was also a brother of the late William and Thomas O'Connell.
Family and friends will honor and remember Buddy's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Friday, June 16th from 4 to 8 p.m. and again on Saturday morning when his funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Burial will follow Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
