Bourne – Mr. Paul A. Almond, of Bourne, formerly of Waltham, died Sunday, August 25, 2013 in Lahey Clinic in Burlington. He was 81.
Paul was born in Acushnet on March 6, 1932, a son of the late Walter and Gladys (Martin) Almond. Raised in Cambridge he graduated from Rindge Academy in 1951 and later from the former Staley School of the Spoken Word in Boston.
After high school he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps aside his best friend, Jack McDougall. After infantry training he was shipped off to the fleet and was sent with his unit to the Korean peninsula. On August 12, 1952 he was gravely wounded by enemy fire and was sent to Japan and then back to the States for treatment. He spent over a year convalescing at the former Chelsea Naval Hospital. While recuperating and fighting numerous infections and illnesses he was awarded the Purple Heart.
On May 7, 1960 in the former Saint Jerome's Church in Arlington he married his best friend's sister, Judy McDougall. A career in radio brought the newly married couple to Fitchburg and the purchase of their first home in Leominster. It was here he worked for WEIM until a move back to the Boston area brought them closer to family and friends. The couple settled in Waltham where they raised their family and had been longtime residents. He worked for WTAO in Cambridge and lastly WMEX in Boston.
Paul worked a short while in the Watertown School system before taking a position in hospital administration at Middlesex County Hospital. After that he became an assistant deputy clerk at the Concord District Court, retiring in April, 1997.
Paul was lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Joseph F. Hill American Legion Post No. 156 in Waltham where he played trumpet in its band for many years. He was a lifetime member of the N.R.A.
He played hockey in school and remained a fan of it all his life and even ice skated in his senior years. Retirement afforded Paul and Judy a move to Cape Cod where they settled in Bourne. He loved time at the Cape either playing golf, time on his boat, tinkering around his house and yard or entertaining family and friends with his music, especially his banjo. He adored his two grandsons.
In addition to his wife of 53 years, Judy, he leaves his children, Thomas W. Almond of Waltham, Kathleen M. Almond of Watertown, Richard D. and Stephen J. Almond, both of Las Vegas, Nevada and Susan T. MacEwen and her husband, William of Waltham; his grandsons, Jeffrey P. and Benjamin E. MacEwen; his siblings, Jean M. Tellier and her husband, Joseph of Belmont, Janet T. Dever of Woburn, David J. Almond and his wife, Delores of Burlington and Walter L. Almond and his wife, Elaine, of Belmont and many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will honor and remember Paul's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Tuesday, August 27th from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Wedneday morning before leaving in procession to Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham, where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will be in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, at 1 pm.
