Mr. Paul J. McGovern, of Waltham, died Wednesday, September 19, 2012 in Newton-Wellesley Hospital. He was 87.
Paul was born on April 27, 1925 in Waltham a son of the late James and Lillian (Rennie) McGovern. Raised in Waltham he was educated in the Waltham Public School System. Like many of his classmates Paul left high school and joined the Navy to serve his country during World War II. Upon completion of the war he returned home and was awarded his diploma at a ceremony given by the City of Waltham.
Shortly upon return to Waltham he worked at the former Waltham Watch Factory and later took a position as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service in Newton where he worked for over 36 years before retiring.
Paul was an avid Red Sox fan and remained a lifelong Ted Williams fan. He coached in the Waltham Youth Baseball program for many years and was a longtime volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program through the Waltham Senior Center.
He is predeceased by his wife, Theresa M. (Cormier) and his son, Michael F. "Mugga" McGovern who died July 17, 2012. He is also predeceased by his brothers, Francis "Buddy" McGovern and Robert McGovern.
Paul leaves his son, Paul J. McGovern, Jr., and his wife, Nancy Lenza, of Waltham; his brothers, Walter McGovern of Waltham and Arthur McGovern in Florida; his grandchildren, Bryan McGovern & his wife, Libby, and Tara Fersko and her husband, Charles; his great-grandchildren, Kevin McGovern, Micky McGovern, Joshua Fersko, and Abigail Fersko.
Family and friends will honor and remember Paul's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Monday, September 24, 2012 from 5 to 8 p.m. and again at 8 a.m. on Tuesday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Charles Borromeo Church, 51 Hall Street, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.
