Waltham – Dr. Paula A. Tatarunis, of Waltham, died Wednesday, September 16, 2015 in Newton-Wellesley Hospital. She was 63.
Paula was born in Lawrence on February 9, 1952, a daughter of Dr. Alphonse Tatarunis of Naples, Florida, and the late Marcia (Lovering) Tatarunis. She was raised in Andover where she graduated from Andover High School in 1969. Four years later she graduated from Wellesley College and then entered the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester.
Trained in internal medicine her professional career as a physician began at the Massachusetts Correctional Institute at Norfolk where she was the medical director. During her career at Norfolk she was always able to balance advocacy and tender care for her patients with her ability to manage their sometimes demanding needs.
After she left Norfolk Paula went to work for Hallmark Health, primarily as an urgent care doctor at their Lawrence Memorial campus in Medford.
In addition to all of her abilities as a healer and a physician she was also a talented poet and photographer. Paula was able to combine her crafts by pairing her breathtaking images of nature with her poetry in a blog that she started more than a dozen years ago that she titled Paula's House of Toast . . . a profound work of art that can be found here: www.paulashouseoftoast.blogspot.com
Paula was the recipient of two Massachusetts Artist Fellowship awards and many of her more than 150 poems have been published in various literary magazines. They captured perfectly her lifelong spiritual quest, her love of nature and insatiable curiosity about life, love and the human condition.
In addition to her father, Paula leaves her husband, Darrell M. Katz; her son, Michael Donohue of Waltham and her brother, Steven Tatarunis of Methuen.
Family and friends will honor and remember Paula's life by gathering for her funeral service at 1 p.m. Saturday, September 19th in Christ Church Episcopal, 750 Main St., Waltham. A memorial service will be held at a time and date to be determined.
