Peter Cianci

June 30, 1933 — May 26, 2012

Waltham – Mr. Peter Cianci, of Waltham, died Saturday, May 26th, 2012 at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in West Roxbury. He was 78.

Peter was born in Cambridge on June 30, 1933, a son of the late Vincent and Angelina (Scarpulla) Cianci. He was raised in Medford and in Cambridge and graduated from Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School. During the Korean War he served with the United States Army.

More than fifty years ago he began his own precision optical business in his mother's basement that later became World Optics located in Waltham. The company was re-named Precision Optical Company that later became part of Optometrics, Inc. in Ayer.

The best part of his life however began on December 7th, 1960 when he met his future bride, Elaine D. Mattes, of Quincy. Elaine, working for John Hancock Insurance at the time, was attending the company Christmas gala at the Copley Plaza Hotel in Boston, where Peter, young, dashing, handsome and bold, and a part-time Arthur Murray Dance Studio instructor, decided to crash the party. It was love at first sight for Peter and he and Elaine were married a year and half later, on June 3, 1962.

True to his promise to Elaine's father to take good care of her he bought a home in Waltham the same year where the couple raised their family and have remained for the past fifty years. They belonged to Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church in Waltham where Peter was a greeter. He was also an avid tennis player and the family belonged to the Waltham Racquet Club for many years.

Peter was devoted to his wife and to his family, cherishing times spent with the entire gang during holidays or cooking for an intimate gathering at the house. He took great care and pride in his home and was often found tending to his meticulous garden.

In addition to his beloved wife of 50 years, Elaine, he leaves his children, Peter J. Cianci and his wife, Sayonara, of Coral Springs, Florida, Sharyn L.Cianci of Waltham and Stephen P. Cianci and his wife, Susan, of Wauconda, Illinois; his grandchildren, Gabriella Cianci, Fiona Marando, Jarryd Bell, Dejanna and Anthony Lowe and Taylor and Nicholas Cianci; his sisters-in-law, Doris Cianci of Marlborough and Barbara Ross of Boston and many nieces and nephews.

He was also the brother of the late John Cianci.

Family and friends will honor and remember Peter's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Thursday, May 31st, from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Friday morning before leaving in procession to Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne on Friday afternoon at 2:45 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701.
