Phyllis M. Cormier

August 9, 1931 — May 12, 2020

Mrs. Phyllis M. (Schmidt) Cormier, of Waltham died on May 12, 2020 in the Atrium at Drum Hill, Chelmsford. She was 88 years old.

Phyllis was born in Boston on August 9, 1931, the daughter of the late Harold and Elizabeth (Stanton) Schmidt. She was raised in Roslindale and upon the death of her father, when she was just 14, the family moved to Waltham. She graduated from St. Mary's High School and then graduated from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Springfield; she would later earn her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Regis College in Weston. Phyllis was born to be a nurse, it came natural to her; she was innately nurturing and a wonderful caretaker. She loved working with patients and their families, even on some of their darkest days. Her nursing career spanned almost fifty years. After retirement from Waltham Hospital she enjoyed working part-time in the Radiology/Oncology department at Beth Israel Deaconess in Boston, a job she maintained well into her 70's.

While in high school at St. Mary's she met Waltham native Paul L. Cormier. The pair wed in St. Mary's Church in November of 1953. After a brief move to Burlington they would make Waltham their lifelong home where they would raise their three children. She always stayed active and enjoyed both running and biking.
Phyllis was fun-loving, intelligent and loved to travel. From family trips to Hampton Beach to Cuba, the USSR, Ireland and beyond, there weren't many destinations she hadn't visited. She was also a devout Catholic and found great solace and peace in attending Mass.

She was the beloved wife of the late Paul L. Cormier and mother of the late Marie E. Clark and is survived by her children, Kathleen A. Twombly (Jacob Himelboim) of Chelmsford and Peter J. Cormier (Susan) of Chelmsford; her grandchildren, Jonathan Clark, Melissa Dickieson (David), Michelle Ablondi (John), Peter Cormier, Jacqueline Brush (Peter) and Brian Cormier; her great-grandchildren, Molly Dickieson, Ryan Ablondi, Peter Brush and Charles Brush; her brother-in-law, Louis Nocera and is also survived by many nieces, nephews and their families.

She was the sister of the late Elizabeth 'Betty' Nocera.

Funeral services and burial in Mount Feake Cemetery are private. At a future time a Memorial Mass will be celebrated in Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, Waltham.

Memorial donations in her memory may be made to The Alzheimer's Association, 309 Waverley Oaks Rd, Waltham, MA 02452.
