Brandon, Florida – Mrs. Phyllis G. ‘Ginny’ (McCray) Quirk, died Saturday, August 14, 2010 at Hawthorne Village in Brandon, Florida at the age of 89 years and 11 months and after a long illness.
Born in Pierce, West Virginia, a daughter of the late James and Alpha (Wagoner) McCray, Phyllis moved to Waltham in her early teens and continued to live in the Lakeview section for over 60 years before moving to Florida eight years ago. She retired from the Walter E. Fernald School where she worked as a care-giver for many years. Before that she was employed by the Waltham Watch Company and Fannie Farmers Candy Store. Although she worked outside the home she was well known in the neighborhood as making the best treats in Lakeview. On many occasions she would provide homemade fudge and whoopee pies to the neighborhood kids who always welcomed a snack. She loved her family, the beach and driving . . . most of the time she would get lost, but that was part of the adventure.
She was the wife of the late Edward J. Quirk, who died in 1994.
Phyllis was the mother of Edward J. Quirk, Jr. and his wife, Patricia, of Flowery Branch, Georgia, James R. Quirk and his wife, Mary Jane, of Panama City Beach, Florida, William D. Quirk and his wife, Carolyn, of East Burke, Vermont, and Pamela A. Allen of Valrico, Florida, and the grandmother of Edward Quirk, Daniel Allen, Stephanie Quirk, Jody Havens and Julie Quirk, and great-grandmother of Joshua Allen.
She was the sister of the late Alta Sapp, Opal Larison, Allie James, Howard ‘Roscoe’ McCray and James ‘Buddy’ McCray.
Family and friends will honor and remember Phyllis’ life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte.20), Waltham on Tuesday, August 24th from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. and again on Wednesday morning at 10:00 a.m. when her funeral service will be held. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
