Phyllis M. Ryan

Waltham – Mrs. Phyllis M. (Beattie) Ryan of Waltham and Key Colony Beach, Florida, formerly of Scituate, died Monday, June 1, 2009, in Newton-Wellesley Hospital. She was 91. Phyllis was born in Waltham on October 8, 1917, a daughter of the late John H. and Mary (Judge) Beattie and had been a lifelong resident. She was a graduate of Saint Mary's High School in Waltham in 1935 and the Pierce School in Boston. Prior to her marriage Phyllis worked as a secretary for nine years at M.I.T. She volunteered 3500 hours at the Waltham Hospital Gift Shop and had been a member of WesWal, the 'Bridge Club', and the San Pablo Women's Craft Guild in Marathon, Florida. An avid Red Sox and Patriots fan, she also loved bingo, crosswords, knitting, and the ocean. Phyllis had quite a wit and will be missed by family and friends. She was the wife of the late John J. Ryan, M.D. and is survived by her children, Daniel Kevin Ryan and his wife, Patricia, of Marshfield, Christine E. Jutstrom and her husband, Robert, Mark B. Ryan and his wife, Mary, all of Waltham and Virginia M. Ryan-Delorfano and her husband, James, of Natick; her sister, Sr. Virginia Beattie, O.P. of Clinton Township, Michigan; her grandchildren, Daniel K. Ryan, Jr., Bryan R. Jutstrom, Jon R. Jutstrom, Erica C. Jutstrom, Kathleen R. Ryan, Susan M. Ryan, Emily M. Ryan, Ryan DeSisto, Christopher Delorfano, James Delorfano and Darnyel Delorfano; 6 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Phyllis was also the sister of the late John Beattie, Grace Hay, Raymond Beattie, and Barbara Priest. Family and friends will honor and remember Phyllis' life by gathering for calling hours at The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte.20), Waltham on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Thursday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Mary's Church, 133 School Street, Waltham where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.
