Mr. Raphael L. Murphy of Waltham died Monday, October 12, 2009 in the Metrowest Medical Center in Framingham. He was 81. Raphael was born on October 19, 1927 in Boston, a son of the late Raphael and Barbara (Norton) Murphy. He was a bank examiner for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation for over twenty years until his retirement. After that, Raphael was an advisor for the International Monetary Fund, the Bahrain Monetary Agency, as well as the Central Bank of Malta. He was an usher at Saint Mary's Church and the former treasurer of the Friends of the Waltham Public Library. Raphael was a World War Two veteran who served in the U.S. Army. He is survived by his wife, Catherine (Megerdichian) Murphy; his children, Karen A. Murphy of Arverne NY and Maura K. Cahn and her spouse, Whitney, of Sudbury; his grandchildren, Alexandra and Jake Cahn; his brothers, Edward Murphy of Virginia, and John and Harold Murphy both of Newton; his sisters, Barbara Osborne of Maryland and Eileen Madden of Newton; and many nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Eleanor O'Brien and Joan Rousseau. Family and friends will honor and remember Raphael's life by gathering for calling hours at The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street, (Rte. 20), Waltham on Thursday from 4-8 pm and again at 9 am on Friday before leaving in procession to Saint Mary's Church, 133 School Street, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 am.
