Waltham – Mr. Raymond M. Lally, of Watertown, died peacefully on Friday, June 8, 2018 in Mount Auburn Hospital, Cambridge. He was 92.
Ray was born in Boston on October 6, 1925, a son of the late John and Kathryn (Hickey) Lally, and was raised in Waltham. During World War II he served with the United States Navy.
In 1950 he married Waltham native Ann M. Fitzpatrick in Saint Mary's Church and six years later the couple moved to Watertown. Until his retirement Ray worked in construction as a bricklayer for Local 3 in Boston.
Ray was always very active and skied right through his 89th year despite having Parkinson's disease. He backpacked the Appalachian Trail, the Pacific Crest Trail, had hiked the thirteen highest peaks in Colorado and was a proud "Adirondack 46'r". For years he loved his daily breakfasts at 'My Other Kitchen' and before that at Andros Diner, both in Belmont . . . and he will long be remembered for growing way too many tomatoes in his backyard.
The husband of the late Ann M. (Fitzpatrick) Lally, he leaves his son, John J. 'Jack' Lally of Watertown; his daughter-in-law, Karen Lally of Watertown; his grandchildren, Leeann, Ryan and Patrick Lally; his siblings, Jacqueline Sears of Concord, Mary Abeyta of Sun City West, Arizona, John Lally and his wife, Patricia, of Wildwood, Florida, Patricia Mahoney of Waltham, Michael Lally and his wife, Katherine, of Leominster and Judy Sarto and her husband, George, of Dennis and many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will honor and remember Ray's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Wednesday, June 13th from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 10 a.m. on Thursday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Patrick's Church, 212 Main Street, Watertown where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Concord.
