Raymond S. 'Sonny' Yetten

Waltham – Mr. Raymond S. ‘Sonny’ Yetten, of Waltham, died Friday, June 3, 2011 at Meadow Green Nursing Home in Waltham. He was 93.

Ray was born in Waltham on June 20, 1917, a son of the late Raymond S. and Mary (Mooney) Yetten. He was a graduate of Saint Mary’s High School in Waltham and Northeastern University in Boston. During World War II Ray served with the United States Navy.

After the war he became a science teacher at Whitman-Hanson Regional High School where he also coached football, basketball and baseball. In 1956 he transferred to the Waltham schools where he taught biology and chemistry. He will best be remembered as “Coach” for his long tenure as the baseball coach at Waltham High School where his teams often competed at the top of the Suburban League and were past champions and co-champs. After his retirement in 1976 he moved to West Harwich on the Cape before returning to Waltham four years ago.

The husband of the late Barbara A. (White) Yetten, he leaves his children, Peter M. Yetten and his wife, Susan, of Westford, Raymond S. ‘Ned’ Yetten, Jr. and his wife, Karen, of Andover and Christopher Yetten of Waltham and his grandchildren, Abbey, Nicholas, Olivia, Ned and Lucas Yetten.

Ray was also a brother of the late Dorothy Clifford.

Family and friends will honor and remember Ray’s life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Tuesday, June 7th, from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Wednesday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Mary’s Church, 133 School Street, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.
