Rev. James E. Flanagan, C.S.S.

Father James E. Flanagan, C.S.S., of the Stigmatine Fathers in Waltham died Sunday, June 22, 2014, in the Maristhill Nursing Home in Waltham. He was 90. Father Flanagan was born in Norwood on January 14, 1924, a son of the late Edward and Grace (Collins) Flanagan.

Father Flanagan entered the Stigmatine Fathers in Waltham on September 21, 1938. He professed his first vows at Waltham on March 9, 1945. He professed his final vows as a Stigmatine Religious on March 9, 1948, in Wellesley and was ordained to the Holy Priesthood at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Milford on June 3, 1950 by then Bishop (later Cardinal) John Wright.

Father Flanagan served in many apostolates of the Stigmatines including Father Duenas School in Guam, Sacred Heart Church in Feeding Hills, Holy Family Church in Lynn, Sacred Heart Church in Waltham where he was the Pastor, Mount Carmel Church in Pittsfield, St. Anthony Church in Agawam, and All Saints Church in Manassas, VA, where he served as the Pastor.

Father Flanagan also served the Stigmatine Community as Vicar Provincial and on the Finance Committee.

He is survived by his brothers and sister, William Flanagan of Walpole, Paul Flanagan of Center Conway, NH, and Nancy Bassignani of Plymouth.

Father Flanagan was also the brother of the late Edward Flanagan, Kenneth Flanagan, Francis Flanagan, and Catherine Flanagan.

Family and friends will honor and remember Father Flanagan's life by gathering on Saturday, June 28th, at 9 am in Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 5 East Main Street, Milford where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 am. Burial will be in Sacred Heart of Jesus Cemetery at 12 noon.
