Richard A. Bergsrud

September 30, 1943 — March 31, 2025

Westborough, MA

Westborough, MA - Richard A. Bergsrud was born September 30, 1943 in Chicago, Illinois a son of the late Phil and Ethel (Lundsberg). He graduated in 1961 from Maine Township High School in Des Plaines, Illinois and earned his Bachelor’s degree from Augustana College in Rock Island, IL in 1965. He then studied and earned his doctorate from University of Illinois School of Medicine in 1970. Dick completed his post-medical residency training from UCLA in 1971.

Dick enjoyed a successful career as a well-respected orthopedic surgeon in the various communities in which he lived throughout his career including Pennsylvania, Venice, Florida and in New Mexico in the communities of Gallup, Hobbs and Ruidoso. He welcomed retirement in 2010.

Outside of his medical practices and the surgery room Dick loved time at his second home in the Cayman Islands. His love for water meant endless scuba dives and snorkeling expeditions. He enjoyed the dry heat of New Mexico which he called home for many years and moved to New England, settling in Westborough, Massachusetts to be closer to family in December of 2021.

A noted history buff he was well versed…and well read. He considered dancing to be his preferred mode of exercise and loved Western music and space on the line dance floor. He was no stranger to the kitchen and loved preparing seafood dishes. Old movies and Westerns were always his preferred screen or television entertainment, and a game of bridge was a great way to pass some time as well as teach others exactly how to play.

He leaves his daughters, Dr. Elizabeth A. Radigan (Douglas) of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts and Dr. Danielle B. Cullen (Dr. Darragh) of Merion Station, Pennsylvania; his grandsons, Taeghan, Rylan and Aidan Cullen; his siblings, Donald Bergsrud (Susan) of Lake Bluff, Illinois, Barbara Brunk of Melrose Park, Illinois and Vivian Becker of Arlington Heights, Illinois; his former wife, Patsy B. Scuzzo (Vincent) of Venice, Florida; many nieces and nephews.

Dick died Monday, March 31, 2025 in UMASS Medical Center after a period of failing health. He was 81.

While Dick made mention of a desired Viking-like funeral he will be cremated and a celebration of his life in the Chicago area this summer is being planned and will be announced.

Arrangements by James + John Heald of The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street, Waltham.
