Waltham - Mr. Richard L. Caplice, of Waltham, formerly of Brookline, died unexpectedly on Thursday, March 16, 2017 after being stricken ill at home. He was 73.
Born on September 6, 1943 in Brockton he was a son of the late Leo and Rose (Jasper) Caplice. He graduated from Concord High School in 1961. After serving in the National Guard Reserves he later earned his bachelor's degree from Stonehill College in 1967.
On February 13, 1972 he married Henryka Weiner in the Chapel at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. They lived many years in Brookline before moving to Waltham in 2007. They also divided their time at their much loved home on Lake Contoocook in Rindge, New Hampshire.
Professionally, his career began at Liberty Mutual Insurance as a computer systems analyst before venturing on his own in the same field as an independent consultant where he worked for over 22 years. He believed in giving back and helping pave the way a little easier for others. What was an easy task for Dick…mathematics…is often a challenge for others. Dick loved volunteering as a tutor in the after school program at Saint Mary's Church in Waltham as well as privately for other students. His faith was always important and he was a member of Saint Mary's Church in Waltham and formerly in Brookline at St. Mary of the Assumption in Brookline.
While you only get to live once you get to serve twice in the game of tennis. Dick absolutely loved the game and to be on the court with friends in a double's match, an individual match or a simple volley…the sport kept him active and brought him content and happiness.
Dick always had a task at hand and loved projects at home. Home renovations were a welcomed retreat rather than a challenge. He and Henryka loved their walks through the grounds of Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge.
In addition to his wife of 45 years, Henryka, he leaves their daughter, Erin R. Garry and her husband, Nathan of Arlington; his grandchildren, Henry, Rose and George Garry; his siblings, David Caplice and his wife, Linda of Boston, Joseph Caplice and his wife, Donna of Duxbury, Timothy Caplice and his wife, Jane of Sharon, Maureen 'Terri' Miller of Portland, Oregon and many nieces and nephews.
Dick was also a brother of the late Lawrence Caplice and brother-in-law of the late Michael Miller.
Family and friends will honor and remember Dick's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Monday, March 20th from 5 to 8 p.m. His funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 21st in Story Chapel at Mount Auburn Cemetery, 580 Mount Auburn Street, Cambridge at 11 a.m. Burial is private.
In lieu of flowers memorials in his name may be made to Saint Mary's Church, After School Program, 133 School Street, Waltham, MA 02451.
