West Newton - Mr. Richard 'Jack' Gardiner, of West Newton, died Sunday, August 17, 2008 in his home. He was 83. Born in Waltham, a son of the late Joel F. and Jessie A. (Gobey) Gardiner, Jack lived in Waltham for many years before moving to West Newton in 1967. He originally worked for his father in the family's business, Joel F. Gardiner and Son's as a stone and brick mason. He also constructed many homes in the Waltham and Bedford area for Louis J. Kirsch Real Estate. In later years, he did carpentry and remodeling work. Jack was a 1942 graduate of Waltham High School, and a man who loved to travel, research genealogy, enjoyed taking home movies, and loved working in his vegetable garden and yard. He was also a World War II veteran serving with the United States Navy. Jack was the brother of the late Sydney, Fred, and George Gardiner, Augusta LaPointe and Marion Hartwell. He leaves his wife, Jean (Pendleton) Gardiner; his children, Valerie M. Hunt and her husband, Walter, of Boston, Sandra L. Flanagan and Sharon L. Bird of West Newton, Marcia A. Balducci and her husband, James, of Woburn, Janice M. Benes of Westboro, Diana M. Chagnon and her husband, Robert, and Walter A. Bird, all of West Newton and Carolyn A. Fandel of Waltham; fifteen grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and many nieces and nephews. The Funeral will be held on Thursday at 10:15 a.m. from The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte.20), Waltham followed by Graveside Services at Mount Feake Cemetery, 203 Prospect Street, Waltham at 11 a.m. Visiting hours will be on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Partners Hospice, 281 Winter Street, Suite 200, Waltham, MA 02451.
