Waltham – Mr. Richard J. Maher, of Waltham, died Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at his home. He was 77.
Dick, or 'Nipper' as he was known to many, was born in Waltham on June 5, 1935, a son of the late Joseph R. 'Nipper' and Alice V. (Yeo) Maher, and was a lifelong resident. He graduated from Saint Charles High School in Waltham in 1954 and after that earned an associate's degree from Massachusetts Bay Community College. He then served in Germany with the United States Army.
Before his retirement Dick worked as the assistant superintendent with the City of Waltham Water Department. Before that he worked for Penn Trucking in Allston, a unit of the Penn Central Railroad, for thirty-five years.
Dick was also long active in local politics and served for four years as Waltham's Ward 5 city councilor. He was also the coach for 35 years for the 'Indians' of the Waltham 'Little Nippers' Baseball League. Dick was also a longtime member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge No. 1018, in Waltham and the Waltham Sons of Italy on Cedar Street.
He leaves his wife of 48 years, Elaine M. (Butler) Maher; his children, Maureen A. Rotchford and her husband, Gregg, of Framingham, Kevin A. Maher of Waltham, Dennis R. Maher and his wife, Sharon, of Cambridge, Brian W. Maher and his wife, Dana, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Patrick M. Maher and his wife, Irene, of Townsend, Connecticut, Matthew J. Maher and his wife, Jocelynn, of San Jose, California and Adam D. Maher of Waltham; his brother, David L. Maher of Chelmsford; his sister, Carol Kasprzak of Watertown; 10 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will honor and remember Dick's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Wednesday, August 1st, from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Thursday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Charles Borromeo Church, 51 Hall Street, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
