Shrewsbury - Richard J. Sherman passed away in the comfort of his home surrounded by his family on Monday, May 16, 2022. He was 75.
Richard was born on August 12, 1946 in Providence, Rhode Island, son of the late William A. and Eileen R. (McGauran) Sherman. Raised in Cranston, RI, he graduated from Cranston East High School and earned his Bachelor's degree in accounting and finance from University of Rhode Island in 1968. He served in the United States Army as a medic. Richard married Nancy M. Fusaro on June 15, 1968 in Sts. John and Paul Church in Coventry, RI. He later attended Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration Program for Management Development in 1985.
With a background in public accounting, Richard accepted a job at Arthur Young in Worcester and the family made Shrewsbury their home in 1974. He later worked at Norton Company for many years before becoming Executive Vice President of Finance and Administration and Chief Financial Officer for National Amusements in Norwood, retiring in 2014.
Retirement afforded Dick more time with his golf buddies, who were close friends both on and off the course. He enjoyed memberships at Sterling National Golf Club, Oak Hill Country Club in Fitchburg, Valley Country Club in Warwick, RI, and countless rounds locally at Cyprian Keyes Golf Club.
He loved being on the sidelines watching his grandchildren play soccer and running track. He enjoyed spending time closer to the ocean in his native Rhode Island in South Kingston at their summer home.
Richard gave back to his community and church. With his knack and expertise, he was a longtime member of the Finance Committee at St. Mary's Parish and served on the Board of Directors at Baybank and later Webster Credit Union. He served on boards with the American Red Cross in Worcester and the Child Guidance Association. He was Director and Crusade Committee Chair for the American Cancer Society.
In addition to his wife of 53 years, Nancy, he leaves his children, Melissa M. Nattinville and her husband, Jon, Bethany M. Pyro and her husband, Jan, all of Shrewsbury and Matthew J. Sherman and his wife, Katharine, of Indianapolis, Indiana; his grandchildren, Daniel, Anya, Emmy, Mary Kate, and John; his brothers, William Sherman, Jr. (late Patricia) of Bellevue, Washington and David Sherman (Luanne) of Foster, Rhode Island; he is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
