Richard "Dick" Edward Tolan was born in Watertown on 8-28-28. He was known for his humor, so he would always tell people that "I planned it that way" when referring to his birthdate. He passed away unexpectedly in Midlothian, Virginia on June 13, 2017. Previous residences included Detroit (MI), St. Louis (MO), Maricopa (AZ), Atlanta (GA), and Midlothian (VA).
His wife of 59 years, Inta Greizis Tolan, recently passed away in late November 2016. His two children include Richard P. Tolan of St. Charles (MO) and his wife Tina Hoechst, and Dr. Inta "Maggie" Tolan of Richmond (VA) and her wife Karen Mask. He was the proud grandfather to six grandsons: Nicholas, Ryan, Alex and Matt of St. Charles (MO) and Connor and Austin of Richmond (VA).
His siblings include the late Ruth O'Neil of Lubec (ME), the late Rita Zani of Lexington, James Tolan of Marlborough, the late John "Jackie" Tolan of Waltham, and Patricia Poisson of Wayland. His beloved mother was Margaret Farraher Tolan.
Dick honorably served his country as a Navy Yeoman Third Class during World War II, and he was very proud to use his GI Bill benefits at Boston University where he studied business administration. He retired from Levi Strauss & Company as an apparel salesman of women and children's clothing.
His burial will be Saturday, July 8th at 11 a.m. in Calvary Cemetery, 250 High Street, Waltham. A joint memorial for Dick and his sister Ruth O'Neil (who passed away June 4th) will be held for family and friends in Marlborough on Sunday, July 9th.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library in Boston. Keep living the dream dad!
