Waltham – Mrs. Rita I. (Blood) Poisson, died Saturday, March 19, 2011 at Wingate at Brighton. She was 100 years old.
Rita was born in Fitchburg on January 15, 1911, a daughter of the late Charles and Addie (Thompson) Blood, and had been a lifelong resident before moving to Waltham in 1994.
Rita’s family members were Mayflower descendants and she took great pride in her New England heritage. She loved her family and was an avid and lifelong reader, sports fan and crafter. She always solved the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzles . . . in pen . . . and she loved how birds, trees and flowers added beauty and harmony to her landscape.
Rita was grateful, like so many others, that her long life again brought her World Series joy in 2004: since the last time that the Red Sox took the crown she was just seven years old. She felt fortunate to have visited all forty-eight of the continental United States in her travels. Rita was also a parishioner for seventy years of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Fitchburg.
The wife of the late Francis W. Poisson, she leaves her son, Francis W. Poisson, Jr. and his wife, Angela, of Stratford, Connecticut; her daughter, Elizabeth P. Prentiss and her husband, Douglas, of Waltham; her grandchildren, Kenneth, Craig and Todd Poisson and Natalie Prentiss; her great-grandchildren, Joshua, Ryan, Susie, Tyler, Madison and Sylvie Poisson and many nieces and nephews.
Rita was a sister of the late Roger Blood, Robert Blood, Alfred Blood, George Blood, Dorothy Smith, Elizabeth Blood, Freda Putnam, and Charlotte Strum.
Family and friends will honor and remember Rita’s life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Wednesday, March 23rd, from 5 to 7 p.m. and again at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday morning before leaving in procession to the Pieta Chapel at Saint Joseph’s Cemetery, 486 Clarendon Street, Fitchburg where committal services will be held at 10 a.m.
Memorial donations may be made to the Fitchburg Public Library, 610 Main Street, Fitchburg, MA 01420.
