Robert J. Cowie

April 16, 1930 — December 3, 2023

Waltham, MA

Waltham - Bob Cowie’s broken heart led him back to his wife of 72 years, Joan, on Sunday, December 3, 2023. She passed just this past August 25, 2023. Bob was 93. It was a ride on a bus where they met and…the rest is history. Bob and Joan were married on July 29, 1951 in Saint Charles Borromeo Church. Their lives were a wonderful example of faith, family and love.

Robert J. Cowie was born on April 16, 1930 in Waltham a son of the late John and Rose (Baldaro) Cowie. A lifelong resident of Waltham he grew up on the city's South Side on Derby Street. He was a graduate of Waltham High School with the class of 1948 and he later was a graduate of Bentley University Accounting Program.  Bob worked as an accountant and tax preparer for over seventy years. His attention to detail and absolute honesty drove a very successful career.

Bob was a lifelong insatiable Boston sports fan. Cheering for the Red Sox, Celtics, Patriots and Bruins, he faithfully watched each game no matter which team was in season.  He loved to yell the score to his wife and five daughters who didn’t seem to share his passion.  His loving wife would just say “that’s nice honey” and then shake her head. Bob was an avid golfer and bowler and could be seen at many of the city's league nights, on the golf course, or at Wal-Lex Bowling Alley spending time with his family and many friends.

Bob's true love was his wife of seventy-two years and his five beautiful daughters. He was the silent support behind an amazing group of women. Never forgetting to say I love you and always there for advice, comfort, and a helping hand.  His quiet confidence was shown in his humble nature, being the best example of a truly good father and husband. He always said he was blessed with such an amazing family, first his daughters, then with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The Cowie kitchen always had plenty of action. Monday night dinners were always the highlight of Bob’s week. A roast beef dinner with family was when he was happiest.

Bob led his family with a quiet confidence they all loved so much. He always knew his grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s birthdays and never missed anyone at Christmas. His focus was on his family and how he could help each and every one. He made it a point to be simply,” a good man” Bob was a true blessing to his family and will be missed.

In addition to his wife, Joan F. (Shaughnessy) Cowie, he was predeceased by a grandson, Brian Sandlin; son-in-law, Walter Nelson; siblings, John Cowie (late ‘Mid’), Kenneth Cowie (late Helen), Stella Demmons (late Robert) and Muriel Nurse (late William).

He leaves his five daughters, Kathleen A. Nelson of Waltham, Jean M.  Moroso of Marlboro, Ellen R. Cowie of Waltham, Laura J. Bourgeois (Ted) of Middletown, Rhode Island, and Roberta J. Sandlin (Brian) of Falmouth; his sixteen grandchildren, Colleen Wallace (Jeff), Robert Lyons (Sarah), Kevin Lyons (Jennifer), Melissa Theroux (Matthew), Matthew Moroso (Taylor), Nicole Nadeau (Jeremy), Regina Rivard (Mark), Amy Lyons, Jaclyn Onofaro, Kelly Johnson (Adam), Paul Bourgeois (Katie), Stephanie Bourgeois (Justin), Elizabeth Mendicina, (Jon), Christopher Sandlin, Sean Sandlin; his in-laws, Ann Chicco (Guy) of Waltham, Maryellen Jasinski (Tim) of Norwood, Thomas Shaughnessy (Joanne) of Billerica and Jack Shaughnessy (late Marie) of Waltham; twenty-five great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and their families;

Family and friends will honor and remember Bob’s life by gathering for calling hours in the Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham, on Sunday, December 10th from 2 to 5 p.m. and again at 8:30 a.m. on Monday morning before leaving in procession to Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m.  Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
