Waltham - Retired Waltham Deputy Fire Chief Robert J. Maher, of Waltham, died Friday, November 20, 2009 at Maristhill Nursing Home in Waltham. He was 75.

Bob was born in Waltham on April 12, 1934, a son of the late William and Ida (Fewer) Maher, and had been a lifelong resident. He was 1953 graduate of Waltham High School and furthered his education at Massachusetts Bay Community College receiving a degree in Fire Science. Bob served as a sergeant with the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War and received the National Defense Service Medal as well as the Good Conduct Medal. He was appointed to the Waltham Fire Department on July 4, 1965, promoted to Lieutenant on December 28, 1975 and promoted to Captain on August 31, 1985. On May 31, 1992, Bob was promoted to Deputy Fire Chief, a position he held until his retirement on December 25, 1992, after twenty-seven years of dedicated service to the Waltham Fire Department and to the City of Waltham.

He was a member of the Waltham Firefighters Union, Local #866, the Waltham Firefighters Welfare and Relief Association, the Joseph F. Hill American Legion Post #156 and the Marine Corps League Detachment #594. Following his retirement he enjoyed golfing, walking, and spending time with his grandchildren.

Bob was the husband of the late Mary E. (Rivers) Maher and leaves his children, Retired Waltham Police Detective Robert J. Maher of Acton, Cynthia L. Martin of Waltham, Susan E. Doherty of Natick and Waltham Police Sergeant Timothy J. Maher and his wife, Kerry, of Waltham; two sisters, Mary Auld and Teresa Smith both of Waltham; ten grandchildren, one great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews.

Bob was the brother of the late William Maher, Catherine Landry and was the father-in-law of the late Michael Martin

Family and friends will honor and remember Bob's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Mary's Church where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.

Memorial donations in Bob's name may be made to the Waltham Fire Fighters Welfare and Relief Association, 175 Lexington Street, Waltham, MA 02452.
