Robert L. Mayhew

February 2, 1938 — April 23, 2020

Bob Mayhew's children affectionately referred to him as 'Mr. No Problem'. Throughout life, he met challenges and adversities both big and small with an incredibly upbeat, positive attitude and spirit. With a perpetually optimistic approach to things, nothing was ever bad, and when you'd ask Bob how things were, his reply was always a consistent and convincing "Great!" There are lessons in Bob's outlook on life for all of us, and perhaps most particularly now during these most challenging and unprecedented times.

Bob died on Thursday, April 23, 2020 in the Veterans Administration Hospital in Bedford after a battle with cancer. He was eighty-two years old. He will be remembered for his terrific—although always corny—sense of humor, quick wit and laugh and his love of sports, junk food and the sunshine.

Bob was born February 2, 1938 in Elmhurst, Queens, New York, son of the late Robert and Pauline (McGovern) Mayhew. Raised on Long Island, a career opportunity for his dad, an engineer, took the family to Sao Paulo, Brazil during Bob's teenage years. Upon returning to the States at age eighteen, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on October 18, 1956. President Ronald Reagan once said, "Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference in the world. But the Marines don't have that problem."

While he did not see wartime, his service took Bob around the world. He completed Sea, Amphibious Reconnaissance and Cold Weather Survival School and served upon the USS Intrepid (now de-commissioned and located in Manhattan on Pier 86 at 46th Street). Bob was honorably discharged as a Lance Corporal on October 18, 1961.

Upon discharge from the Marines, Bob attended C.W. Post University (now Long Island University) and graduated with his Bachelor's degree. He lived many years in the New England area, both in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, before moving to Sun City, Florida where he made his home for over fifteen years.

Professionally, Bob worked in retail sales before finding his niche in Human Resources. He was employed by the Digital Equipment Corporation, The Computer Merchant and Raytheon before finally retiring with Compaq/Hewlett-Packard.

Bob leaves his children, Paula Elizabeth Mayhew and Robert Anglim Mayhew, both of Waltham, Massachusetts, his brother Paul Mayhew and sister-in-law, Patricia of Bethel, Connecticut and his nephews, Michael, Christopher and Patrick Mayhew. Bob was predeceased by his former wife and mother of his children, Jo Anglim Wennerberg, who died in November of 2019.

Funeral services are private, and Bob will be buried with military honors in Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

Memorials in his name may be made to the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital, 200 Springs Road, Bedford, MA 01730.
