Mr. Robert W. Mooney, of Washington, D.C., a native of Waltham, Massachusetts died unexpectedly at home on Wednesday, January 2, 2019. He was 68.

Robert was born on February 23, 1950 in Waltham a son of the late Robert P. and Agnes F. (Gormley) Mooney. He graduated from Saint Mary's High School with the class of 1968 and then earned his Bachelor's degree from Brandeis University and his Master's in Business Administration from Boston University.

Bob worked in the banking industry for many years. During his career at the FDIC, Bob was well known for his commitment to community banking, consumer protection and economic inclusion. Upon his retirement from the FDIC in 2015 as the National Director for Minority and Community Development Banking, the FDIC's Board of Directors recognized Bob as a person who made a lasting impression on all with whom he interacted. 'Mr. Mooney demonstrated a deep and unwavering commitment to promoting opportunities for institutions to meet the financial needs of underserved communities, ensure fair lending, and promote equal access to credit. He developed genuine and sincere relationships with numerous community and consumer groups, bankers, industry stakeholders, and government officials. His colleagues have recognized him as a person who devoted his life to social justice and uplifting those who may be economically or socially disadvantaged, whether in banking, at the FDIC or in individual communities.'

In retirement Bob continued this work and in October 2018, he was recognized by the National Bankers Association, the voice of minority banking, with a lifetime achievement award. He also served on the board of directors of Carver Federal Savings Bank in New York, New York.

Aside from work Bob enjoyed travelling, CNN broadcasts and time spent in New York City.

He leaves his siblings, Arlene Gordon (Stephen) of Waltham and Richard Gannon (Carol) of Bellingham; nieces and nephews including, Kaitlyn Cullinane (Brian), Kristen Gordon, Jeffrey Gordon (Korinne Robertson), James, William, Edward, Wayne Alarie, Kimberly LaRochelle, Kelly Gannon and Lisa; also survived by great-nieces & great-nephews.

Family and friends will honor and remember Robert's life by gathering to visit in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham, on Friday, January 25th from 10 to 11 a.m. followed by his funeral service at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.

Additionally, a Celebration of Life will be held in Washington, D.C. in early March at a time and place to be announced.
