Tyngsborough – Mr. Robert T. Smith, formerly of Waltham and Westford, died Sunday, April 22, 2018 in Life Care Center of Acton after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease. He was 85.
Bob was born October 14, 1932 in Boston a son of the late Robert T. and Ruth Helen (Archung) Smith. Raised and educated in Everett he was a graduate of Everett High School. He honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. At a dance one evening he met Waltham native Mary Ada Hardy at Moseley's on the Charles. After a courtship they later married in her native parish, Saint Mary's on October 26, 1963 and they made Waltham their home before moving to Westford in 2005 and recently to Tyngsborough.
He served the City of Waltham as a firefighter assigned primarily to Engine 4 on Prospect Street where he worked over twenty years before retiring in 1988. Not one to sit still he then owned and operated Robert Smith Carpet Cleaning Company. Bob also served as a sexton at Christ Church in Waltham and for the Visiting Nurses Association in building maintenance.
In addition to his wife of 54 years, Mary Ada Smith, he leaves their children, Kathleen A. Smith (William Parquet) and Brian J. Smith; his much loved and only grandchild Lucas Laroche; his siblings, Paul Smith (Jean) of Everett and Harriett Smith of California and several nieces and nephews.
He was also the brother of the late Carolyn Taylor.
Family and friends will honor and remember Bob's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Thursday, April 26th from 4 to 7 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Friday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Mary's Church, 133 School Street, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial with military honors will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.
