Waltham – Mr. Robert E. Var, of Waltham, died Tuesday, May 24, 2022 in his home. He was 90 years old.
Bob was born in New York City on July 20, 1931 to the late Paul and Fay (Goss) Var. Raised in Long Island, he lived in Minnesota and California before settling in Waltham in 1967.
He attended Berlin High School in Cherry Plain, New York and enlisted in the United States Air Force upon graduation. He served during the Korean War and following his discharge he used the G.I. Bill to pursue his education at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge and later earned his Master's degree at the University of California at Berkley.
Most recently he had worked as a physicist at Draper Laboratories in Cambridge until his retirement. At Honeywell Inc. he led the development team that created the gyroscope, a device that is used to provide stability or maintain a reference direction in navigation systems, automatic pilots, and stabilizers in rocket ships. Despite all of his professional and academic success, Bob will always be remembered for his humble and kind demeanor.
Of all his accomplishments, his most precious feat was celebrating nearly 65 years married to his beloved wife, Janet. The two were married June 29, 1957.
In addition to learning about the world and how to better it, Bob loved music and was a member of the New Bostonians quartet singing group.
In addition to his wife, Janet E. (Hayes) Var, Bob leaves his brother John A. Var (Eleanor) of Roseville, California, and several nieces, nephews, and their families including Kim Poirier.
Bob was the father of the late Eric E. Var.
