Romans E. Rudzitis

Hyde Park – Mr. Romans Edgars Rudzitis, of Hyde Park, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family in Marlborough on Wednesday, March 18, 2020 at the age of 95.
Romans was born on November 12, 1924 to parents Hermine and Nikolajs Rudzitis in the Čiekurkalns neighborhood of Riga, Latvia, growing up alongside his sister, Violeta. He attended the Riga State Gymnasium No.1 until 1943, when global conflict reached the Baltic. At the age of 19, he became an above-the-knee amputee. Ever resilient, Romans ultimately reunited with family, resumed his education, and participated in Latvian cultural activities at the Marbeck refugee camp. He completed a 1-year course in Roman Philology at the Baltic University in Exile and, in 1951, immigrated to the United States under sponsorship of the Church World Service Organization in Framingham.
The first Latvian immigrant Romans met after his arrival in America was Silvija Bertholds, who ultimately became his beloved wife of nearly forty-seven years. The two were married on October 1, 1955, and their marriage was blessed with two wonderful daughters: Violeta and Sandra. Silvija passed away on March 29, 2002.
Romans earned his associate (1961) and bachelor's (1963) degrees in mechanical engineering and management with honors at Northeastern University in Boston. He worked at Sylvania for many years and later retired from Raytheon as a senior development engineer on January 31, 1990.
Romans was also a talented lifelong musician, his favorite instrument being the accordion, and enjoyed playing at numerous Latvian cultural activities in Boston. He was a longtime member of the Latvian Academic Fraternity in Boston.
Romans leaves behind a proud and loving family, Violeta and Stephen Lukosus of Waltham and their children, Stephen, Jr. and Vanessa, as well as Sandra and David Youngstrom of Marlborough and their children, Daniel (Catherine Militello), Andrew (Kristen Hawkes) and Michael. Romans lived to welcome his first great-grandchild into the family, Cedar, born to Andrew and Kristen in 2019.
Romans is remembered as a loving "Papa/Opa" and a true survivor in every sense of the word.
Romans family will gather privately to honor and to remember his life in The Joyce Funeral Home, Waltham. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery, West Roxbury.
