Middleborough – Mr. Ronald E. Nelson, a retired Belmont patrolman, died Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at Oak Hill in Middleborough. He was 82.
Ron was born in Boston on May 3, 1934, a son of the late Harold and Florence (Thomas) Nelson. He was raised and educated in Belmont and lived in Waltham and in Pennsylvania before retiring to Harwich ten years ago.
During the Korean War he served with the United States Marine Corps.
In 1955 Ron began a twenty-eight year career with the Belmont Police Department. After retiring from the police force he headed up security at Walnut Hill School in Natick for a number of years.
After his second retirement he moved to the Cape where he thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his family, especially with the grandchildren. Ron loved walking the beach, the sights and the sounds of the ocean, and the peace that came with it. He was a follower of all Boston sports, especially the Celtics.
He leaves his children, Pamela A. Sanderson and her husband, Bruce, of Watertown and Edward R. Nelson and his wife, Diane R. Schoener, of Middleborough; his grandchildren, Kevin and Lynne Sanderson, Ronald and Nicole Nelson, Katelyn LaBombard and Shannon and Meghan McGrath; his step-grandchildren, Kimberly Smith, Katelyn Bernabeo and Jillian Schoener; his great-grandchildren, Henry, Drew and Eli Nelson and Amara Schoener and his sister and brothers, Charlotte Rose of Webster, New Hampshire, Robert Keaney of Canaan, Maine, Kenneth Keaney of Billerica and Richard Keaney of Townsend.
Ron was also the father of the late Victoria McGrath.
Family and friends will honor and remember Ron's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Tuesday, June 28th, 2016 from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 11 a.m. on Wednesday morning when his funeral service will be held. Burial will be in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne at 2:15 p.m.
