Waltham – Mr. Rosario A. "Rusty" Mula, of Waltham, died Monday, February 23, 2015 at his home. He was 86.
Rusty was born in Waltham on December 6, 1928, a son of the late Vincenzo and Rose (Falzone) Mula, and had been a lifelong resident. After graduating from Waltham High School he served with the United States Army during the Korean War.
After his discharge from the service Rusty went to Northeastern University in Boston on the newly created GI Bill. He earned his bachelor's degree and went to work for the City of Waltham, first in the Parks and Recreation Department, eventually becoming its director. After that Rusty became the city's Purchasing Agent until his retirement from that position in 1989.
He belonged to the Massachusetts Association of Public Purchasing Officials and had been a longtime member and past president of Dante Alighieri Lodge # 648, Order of Sons of Italy in America.
Following his retirement from the city Rusty went back to work at Boston Bark Corporation where he thoroughly enjoyed working with his sons Vin and Andy. He also made it a point to spend lots of time with his grandchildren attending all of their school and sporting events.
He leaves his wife, Dorothy A. (Akey) Mula; his children, Vincent A. Mula and his wife, Dawnmarie, John S. Mula and his wife, Pamy, Andrew G. Mula and his wife, Madalyn and Mary Jo Mula, all of Waltham; his daughter-in-law, Carolyn (Fox) Mula of Westwood; his grandchildren, Alison, Anthony, Ryan, Christian, Evan, Rosalie, Britney, Sean, Jackson, and Jordan Mula, Michael and Carli Tallia, and Brianna Homsi; his sisters, Mary Toohey of Hudson and Susan Mula of Natick and many nieces and nephews.
Rusty was also the father of the late Michael C. Mula and a brother of the late Josephine Mula, Carmela Renna, Carmelo 'Chuck' Mula, Katherine McCue, Anne Marcolina and Sally Bonica.
Family and friends will honor and remember Rusty's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Thursday, February 26th, from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Friday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Jude Church, 147 Main Street, Waltham, where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Grove Hill Cemetery, Waltham.
