Waltham – Mr. Salvatore P. DeMarco, of Waltham, died Sunday, April 13, 2014 at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge. He was 88.
Affectionately known as either 'Sal' or 'Toto' to family and friends he was born at home in Watertown on August 6, 1925 to the late Thomas and Pasqualina (Merullo) DeMarco. He was a 1943 graduate of Watertown High School and joined the United States Navy right after that, serving for the duration of World War II.
On May 28, 1950 he married Anna M. Porcaro of Watertown and the couple lived in town before moving to Waltham in 1966 where they have been residents since. Sal worked for twenty-three years as a welder for Lite Control Corp. in Watertown before becoming a route-man for Folz Vending Company of New York where he worked until his retirement.
In addition to caring for his family his passions beyond home were playing a good round of golf, bowling and coin collecting. Three years ago he won a tournament at his favorite course, Leo J. Martin, where he was an informal instructor of the game.
Sal was a faithful member of Our Lady's Parish in Waltham where he was a longtime usher. He also belonged to the Amvets Post 41 in Watertown.
In addition to his wife of sixty-four years, Anna, he leaves his children, Laura A. Osborne and her husband, Paul, of Dedham, Diane M. Abbott and her husband, Harvey, of Burlington, Stephen P. DeMarco of Waltham, Nancy L. Fletcher and her husband, Dave, of Natick and Robert T. DeMarco of Lincoln; his grandchildren, Lauren Abbott and Julia and Christian Fletcher; his sisters, Mary Grilli Smith of Revere, Linda Mason of Saugus, Sylvia Kovil of Revere, Loretta DeSisto of Maine and Edith Oxford of Oregon and many nieces and nephews.
Sal was also the brother of the late Larry Covino.
Family and friends will honor and remember Salvatore's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Tuesday, April 22nd from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Wednesday morning before leaving in procession to Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will take place on Thursday in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
