Mr. Salvatore J. Valente, of Wayland, died Wednesday, June 21, 2017 in the Mary Ann Morse Rehabilitation Center in Natick. He was 94.
Sal was born in Somerville on May 4, 1923, a son of the late Joseph and Agnes (Rizzi) Valente. He was raised and educated in Watertown and served with the United States Navy during World War II.
On November 15, 1945 he married the love of his life, Watertown native Ruth A. Perry, in Saint Patrick's Church. The pair lived in Watertown for a time before moving to West Newton where they raised their family.
Sal was long active at Saint Bernard's Church in West Newton and was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. Until his retirement he worked for more than forty years for Homes, Inc., a Newton real estate company, as their resident contractor. Sal was the kind of guy who not only had all the tools, but knew how to use every one of them with an expert's skill.
In retirement Sal and Ruth moved to Natick and had a winter place in Vero Beach, Florida. Golf became a favorite pastime for Sal and he could often be found on the links at Maynard Country Club. Their move to Wayland came three years ago.
In addition to his wife of seventy-one years, Ruth, he leaves his children, Robert Valente and his wife, Josephine Carpino, of Norton, Janet Harkins and her husband, Robert, of San Diego, California, Joyce Valente of Waltham and Joanne DiDuca and her husband, Bruno, of Waltham; his brother, Rocco Valente of Wilmington; nine grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Sal was also the brother of the late Anna Holland, Alexander Valente and Genevieve O'Dea.
Family and friends will honor and remember Sal's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Sunday, June 25th from 2 to 5 p.m. and again at 8 a.m. on Monday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Patrick's Church, 212 Main Street, Watertown where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Burial will follow in Newton Cemetery.
