Winter Garden, Florida – Mrs. Shirley A. (Lane) Welch, of Winter Garden, formerly of Waltham, died Friday, November 25, 2011 at Health Central Park Nursing Home in Winter Garden. She was 79.
Shirley was born in Waltham on January 14, 1932, a daughter of the late Charles and Mary (Chiasson) Lane, and had been a lifelong resident before moving to Florida 7 years ago. She graduated from Saint Mary's High School in Waltham in 1949 and went to work for the Raytheon Company in Waltham for the next fifteen years. After that she worked as a bookkeeper for the Kantwet Company in Newton and also worked in the real estate business for a number of years. Shirley also worked for the Pure Aqua Company in Waltham until her retirement. She was a longtime member of Our Lady's Parish in Waltham and was a talented musician who played piano in a local oldies band.
The wife of the late Walter F. Welch, she leaves her children, Walter F. Welch, Jr. and his wife, Jeana, of Waltham, Theodore W. Welch and his wife, Laurie, of Clinton, Doreen M. Abreu of Daytona Beach Shores, Florida, Christopher Welch and his wife, Clare, of Waltham and Marc Kelley Welch and his wife, Jamie, of Haverhill; her sisters and brother, Joan Caruso of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Robert Lane of Waltham and Marie Sweeney of Charlotte, North Carolina; 7 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
Shirley was also the mother-in-law of the late Lawrence Abreu and a sister of the late Charles Francis Lane and Margaret Lorna White.
Family and friends will honor and remember Shirley's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Wednesday, November 30th from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Thursday morning before leaving in procession to Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 311 Arsenal Street, Watertown, MA 02472.
