Simon P. Poirier

Waltham

Mr. Simon P. Poirier, of Waltham, died at home on Sunday, August 11, 2024 following a period of declining health. He was 93.

Simon was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia on February 23, 1931, a son of the late Xavier and Laura (Chiasson) Poirier, and moved to the States in 1962, settling in Waltham. He was a talented carpenter and was a member of Local 275 of the Carpenters Union in Newton. Most recently he worked for more than twenty years as a carpenter at Babson College in Wellesley.

He was a longtime parishioner at Our Lady’s Church on Trapelo Road and had been a member and past-president of the French-American Victory Club on Elm Street. 

Spring and Fall trips ‘back home’ to Cape Breton were always on his calendar where he got a chance to catch up with family, friends . . . and fishing. In later years he and his wife Helen spent many happy winters in Boynton Beach, Florida.

The husband of the late Helen L. (Gallant) Poirier, he leaves his children, Paula M. Fagan (Stephen) of Waltham, Stephen Hawkins (Andree) of Toronto, Ontario and Paul Hawkins (Linda) of London, Ontario; his grandchildren, Jessica and Ryan Hawkins; his great-grandson, Trent Hawkins; his sister, Madeline Cormier of Melbourne, Florida and several nieces, nephews and their families.

Simon was also a brother of the late Albert, Johnny, Henry and Gerard Poirier, Catherine Vienneau, Beatrice Graham, Pauline Ferguson, Marie Chiasson, Jeanette Cormier, Margaret Savoie, and Lorraine Bourque.

Family and friends will honor and remember Simon’s life by gathering for an evening wake on Tuesday, August 20th from 4 to 7 p.m. in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham and again at 9 a.m. on Wednesday morning before leaving in procession to Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Church, 880 Trapelo Road, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.
