Sr. Joan Marie Felton, R.C.E., passed away on Wednesday, August 9, 2023, at the MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham. She was 93.
She was born in Arlington on August 13, 1929, a daughter of the late Carl and Maybelle (Colbert) Felton. She graduated from Our Lady of Pity High School in Cambridge, and soon after started her journey as a beloved member of the Religious of Christian Education order and dedicated her life to teaching and serving others.
Sr. Joan entered into the Religious of Christian Education order in July of 1948, committing herself wholeheartedly to a life of faith and service. She made her First Profession in February of 1951, demonstrating her unwavering devotion to God and his teachings. Sr. Joan's journey led her to make her Final Vows in August of 1956, solidifying her commitment to a life of religious service. She also received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Regis College in 1967.
She dedicated her life to shaping young minds and instilling the values of kindness and empathy in all the children she taught. Sr. Joan began her fruitful journey at Jeanne D'Arc Academy in Milton, where she laid the foundation for a legacy of inspiring young minds. Her teaching career spanned several decades and she continued this noble mission by teaching generations of children at Immaculata School in Hendersonville, North Carolina, Marycliff Academy in Winchester, and St. James School in Arlington.
Throughout her later years, Sr. Joan found solace and fulfillment in ministries that were particularly close to her heart. She dedicated herself to reading to the children at Perkins School, bringing joy through stories to those who could not see the written word. Additionally, she served as a Sacristan, dutifully taking care of the sacred objects and ensuring that the religious services were conducted with reverence.
Sr. Joan cherished artistry and had an eye for beauty. Flower arranging became one of her favorite pastimes as she honed her artistic skills and created stunning arrangements that brought joy and tranquility to others. Known for her warm and outgoing nature, Sr. Joan had a natural aptitude for connecting with people. She possessed a sociable spirit that endeared her to all those fortunate enough to know her. Her genuine love for children shone through as she delighted in putting on plays for them, creating wonderful memories that they would cherish forever. She also loved to travel, with a special affinity for France and Ireland.
She is survived by her brother, Carl T. Felton of Maryland, as well as many nieces and nephews who were privileged to have Aunt Joan as a guiding light in their lives. Additionally, Sr. Joan leaves behind her confreres in the Religious of Christian Education Community, whose lives were deeply enriched by her unwavering devotion.
She was the sister of the late Francis and Walter Felton, and the late Mary Baruffaldi.
Family and friends will honor and remember Sr. Joan's life by gathering to visit on Thursday, August 17th, 2023 at 9:00 a.m. at Saint Patrick's Manor, 863 Central St, Framingham, where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Watertown.
