Waltham – Mr. Sten R. Anderson, of Waltham, died Thursday, March 19, 2015 at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. He was 97.
Sten was born in Gothenburg, Sweden on December 3, 1917, the son of the late Adolph and Eleanora (Walquist) Anderson. He came to the United States as a child and settled with his family in Waltham. He attended Waltham schools and after the outbreak of World War II joined the United States Army.
Sten's unit, the 87th Infantry Division left the States in November, 1944 and was immediately attached to General George S. Patton's Third Army. He saw action in the Rhineland, and during the harsh winter of 1944-45 at the infamous Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes that determined the outcome of the war. He stayed in Europe well after Germany's surrender in May, 1945 and was discharged from the service in January, 1946.
In April, 1948 he married Waltham native Josephine A. Terrasi in Sacred Heart Church and the couple made Waltham their lifelong home. Trained as a machinist he worked for years at the J.L. Thompson Company in Waltham, Premium Metals in Millis and until his retirement at BLH Corporation in Waltham. After that he drove a cab for a time for Central Square Taxi and later worked as a driver for Brasco Florist Shop on High Street.
In addition to his wife of sixty-seven years, Josephine, he leaves his daughter, Donna J. Brannelly and her husband, Robert, of Holliston and his grandchildren, Mark and Michael Brannelly.
Sten was a brother of the late Stina Edmunds.
Family and friends will honor and remember Sten's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Tuesday, March 24th from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Wednesday morning before leaving in procession to Sacred Heart Church, 311 River Street, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Newton Cemetery.
