Wayland – Mr. Stephen J. Sullivan, of Wayland, died Thursday, July 31, 2014 at Epoch of Weston. He was 86.
Stephen was born in Cambridge on December 31, 1927, a son of the late Stephen and Mary (Connors) Sullivan. He had been a longtime resident of Weston before moving to Wayland.
After serving with the United States Navy at the end of World War II he earned his bachelor's degree and later a master's degree in geophysics from Boston College, graduating in 1951. A physicist by training he started his own company, Spectrum Systems, Inc. in Waltham in 1964. The company was a pioneer in the development of light spectrum technology and infrared light and filter research. Spectrum's work became the early science that led to today's missile defense targeting used throughout the defense industry.
A strong, thoughtful and kind family man, Steve was well respected at home and at work. He was a loyal Boston sports fan and enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Europe with his family.
He coached Little League Baseball in Weston, was a coordinator of the CCD program at Saint Julia's Parish and served on the President's Council at Boston College.
He leaves his wife of 62 years, Josephine (Lanni) Sullivan; his children, Stephen Sullivan and his wife, Patricia, of Boston, Diane Reichlen and her husband, Warren, of Wayland, David Sullivan of Marlboro and Janet Sullivan and her husband, Darren Greene, of Wellesley; his grandchildren, Michael and his wife, Lisa, Kristopher, Scott and Jaime Reichlen and Aidan Greene; great-granddaughter, Madison Reichlen and many nieces and nephews.
Steve was also the brother of the late Eleanor Schromm.
Family and friends will honor and remember Stephen's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Monday, August 4th from 3 to 8 p.m. and again at 10 a.m. on Tuesday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Julia's Church, 374 Boston Post Road, Weston where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Linwood Cemetery, Weston.
