Steven J. Skarbek

Mr. Steven J. Skarbek, of Waltham, died Friday, October 13, 2023 at his home in Waltham. He was 68.

Steven was born in Boston on December 25, 1954 and had been a lifelong resident until meeting his greatest love, Diane. They married and moved to Waltham where they spent the remainder of their lives together. He was a graduate of South Boston High School. Steven had worked as a laborer for the Boston Water & Sewer Commission for most of his adult-life.

He leaves his daughter, Nicole M. Skarbek of Waltham; his mother, Josephine (Caulfield) Skarbek of South Boston; his brother David Skarbek Sr. (Karen Skarbek); his sisters Susan (Skarbek) Condrey (David Condrey), Carol (Skarbek) Connolly (Paul Connolly), Michelle Skarbek; and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his beloved and devoted nurse and best friend (who was like a son to him), Richard Kyewalabye and his son Mark Kyewalabye of Chelmsford. 

Steven was also husband of the late Diane (Gaudet) Skarbek, father of the late Ulysses S. Skarbek and son of the late Stanley J. Skarbek.

He was always known as a hands-on individual, teaching himself to repair, build, and refurbish just about anything. Steven loved a good video game, and it was one of his favorite activities to do with his daughter. An avid sports fan, Steven always cheered on his beloved Bruins, Red Sox, Patriots, and Celtics. He will be remembered for his ridiculously corny (and sometimes inappropriate) dad-jokes, his love of the thrill of sports games, placing friendly wagers on teams, playing the lottery in hopes to hit it big, and buying everyone scratch tickets as gifts for every holiday and birthday in hopes he’d bring them luck and good fortune. Mostly, he will be remembered for his deep love of music, and playing Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jimi Hendrix, and The Rolling Stones at obnoxiously high volume inside and outside, while dancing around the living room, pool, or beach. 

Family and friends will honor and remember Steven’s life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home on Saturday from 9:30am to 10:30am before leaving in procession to Sacred Heart Church, 311 River Street, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11am. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham. Repass to follow at 1pm at the Lyman Estate, 185 Lyman Street, Waltham.
