Amesbury – Mr. Stewart C. Flynn, of Amesbury, died Saturday, September 20, 2014 at Country Center for Health and Rehabilitation in Newburyport. He was 91.
Stew was born in Watertown on November 4, 1922, a son of the late Charles and Marguerite (Bilodeau) Flynn. He was a graduate of Watertown High School and loved playing baseball. He was drafted during World War II into the United States Army Air Corps and was serving on the island of Tinian when the atomic bomb was dropped in August, 1945, effectively ending the Pacific war. He belonged to the 9th Bombardment Group out of Fort Devens, Massachusetts and by the end of the war had lost his hearing while serving as a waist gunner aboard a B-29 'Superfortress' bomber.
In 1949 he married the love of his life, Jamaica Plain native, Mary A. Murphy and the pair were married for thirty years until Mary's sudden death on October 26, 1979. They made their home in Arlington and later in Georgetown before Stew's move to Amesbury eleven years ago. In Georgetown they were longtime members of Saint Mary's Parish.
Stew loved spending time with his family, especially at Old Orchard Beach in Maine. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was a meticulous dresser, including his fondness for wearing a hat. He was proud of his Irish ancestry and was known to be able to sing a few Irish classics. He will be remembered as being funny, loyal, loving, kind and thoughtful.
Until his retirement he worked as an inspector for the United States Customs Service at Logan Airport in Boston and later at facilities in Gloucester.
He leaves his children, Marilyn Anderson of North Andover, Maureen Griffin and her husband, Michael, of Arlington, Geraldine Wilson and her husband, Glenn, of Burlington, James Flynn and his wife, Pamela, of Plaistow, New Hampshire, Carol Melisi and her husband, George, of Billerica, Lawrence Flynn and his wife, Maureen, of Boca Raton, Florida, Dorothy Robertson and her husband, Thistleton, of Gloucester and Michelle Wade and her longtime companion, Benjamin Bolen, of South Hampton, New Hampshire; 17 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Stew was also the brother of the late Dorothy Crane, Barbara Hannon, Phyllis McKenna and Priscilla Hood.
Family and friends will honor and remember Stewart's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Tuesday, September 23rd from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Wednesday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Mary's Church, 133 School Street, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.
