Newton - Mr. Stian Mollung, of Newton, died Sunday, January 6, 2013 at Newton-Wellesley Alzheimer's Center. He was 90.
Stian was born in Oslo, Norway on August 16, 1922, a son of the late Johan and Andrea Hansen, and immigrated to the United States in 1952. He and his wife, Erna, bought a home in Waban where they raised their family and had lived before moving to Hopedale in 1987.
Stian led an interesting, challenging and rewarding life. He grew up in pre-war Norway on a farm outside of Oslo where he was part of the Singing Boys of Norway choral group and where he became an accomplished ski jumper. After the Nazi invasion of his homeland, Stian became part of the Norwegian underground and fought with them until the end of World War II.
In 1957, five years after coming to the United States, he became an American citizen. Trained as a printer, Stian worked in that position for a number of years for Little, Brown and Company, a Boston publishing firm. After that Stian became a graphic arts teacher for the Attleboro public schools.
Stian and two partners had been the owners of Grand View Campground in Rochester, New Hampshire, an enterprise that they started and where their families spent many memorable summers. He was a lifelong member of the Sons of Norway, Norumbega Lodge and was a tenor singing with the Norwegian Glee Club of Boston. Stian also belonged to Ski for Light, an organization that teaches the blind how to cross-country ski.
Stian's wife, Erna S. (Hovind) Mollung died July 21, 2006 and he was predeceased by his siblings in Norway.
He leaves his children, Tom S. Mollung and his wife, Rosemary, of Medway and Thor A. Mollung and his wife, Karen, of Medford and his grandchildren, Leanne, Danielle, Allyson and Kristoffer Mollung.
Family and friends will honor and remember Stian's life by gathering to visit at 10 a.m. on Friday, January 11th, in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham where his funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Newton Cemetery.
