Sydney J. Turner, of Feura Bush, New York, died peacefully Tuesday March 12, 2024 at his niece’s home in Waltham. Sydney was born at Waltham Hospital on November 15, 1934, the son of the late Cyril and Mary (Webb) Turner. Syd graduated from Waltham High School and Tufts University and served in the U.S. Navy.
After the Navy, he moved to Slingerlands, New York and taught Speech and Drama at Bethlehem Central High School in Bethlehem, NY. During his tenure there, Syd directed many highly acclaimed plays and musicals for the high school. In addition, as a member of the Slingerlands Players, a community drama group, he enjoyed both performing in and directing a number of plays.
Syd was a fine woodworking craftsman, both designing and creating many beautiful pieces including jewelry boxes, lamps, tables, bookcases, and an amazing contemporary style desk.
In the 80s, with the help of an architectural student, Syd designed his contemporary house in Feura Bush with passive solar heating, a circular staircase, and many windows overlooking his beautiful, woodsy yard.
Syd was very witty and had a dry sense of humor. He had a great love of literature, puns, and the English language with all its complications. He was also a talented Bridge player reaching the level of Life Master. Over the years he enjoyed following the Red Sox and Celtics, but recently he had been an avid fan of women’s basketball, especially the UConn Huskies and the Seattle Storm.
Syd is predeceased by his parents, his sister, Joyce Turner Keith, and his brother-in-law, Arthur Keith. He is survived by his nieces, Loxi Keith and Lorna Keith, both of Waltham, and his former wife and friend, Carol Turner of Slingerlands, NY.
He will be greatly missed.
