Waltham – Retired Waltham Firefighter Terence M. "Terry" Hines, of Waltham, died Monday, September 30, 2013 at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. He was 91.
Terry was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia on March 6, 1922, one of nine children born to the late Michael J. and Mary Lucy (McKinnon) Hines. The family moved to the United States when he was an infant and settled in Waltham.
During World War II he served as a sergeant with the United States Army. After the war Terry went to work at the Raytheon Company before being appointed a Waltham firefighter in March, 1947. Most of his time on the job was spent at Engine 5 on Moody Street until his final assignment as the chief's aide at the Central Station on Lexington Street.
After a thirty year career with the fire department he retired in 1977 and moved to Ashland where he lived before returning home to Waltham six years ago and where he took up residence at the Francis Cabot Lowell Mill.
Not a man to sit idly, he was long active with the Warrendale Little League where he was a coach and a past president. Terry also enjoyed singing tenor in a Barber Shop Quartet and was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge No. 1264 in Framingham; American Legion Post No. 77 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2331, both in Ashland.
The husband of the late Evelyn E. (McKenzie) Hines and Barbara L. (Finegan) (Burns) Hines he leaves his children, Susan Fay and her husband, Leonard; Terence "Ted" Hines and his wife, Kathryn; Laura Hines and her husband, David Burns, all of Waltham; Jayne Hildick of North Brookfield; his grandchildren, James, Andrew, Matthew and John Burns; Terence, Jeffrey and Timothy Hines; Michael and Kevin Fay; Kathleen Cardillo and Devin, Emily, Laura, Ethan and Abigail Hildick; his sister, Helen Benoit of Falmouth and seven great-grandchildren.
Terry was also a brother of the late Daniel, Edward and Martin Hines, Mary Mogan, Elvira Hoagland, Rita Janual and Wilina Pettingil.
Family and friends will honor and remember Terry's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Friday, October 4th from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning before leaving in procession to Sacred Heart Church, 311 River Street, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.
