Belmont – Mr. Thomas Brian Roach, of Belmont, died Sunday, January 29, 2012 at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He was 68.
Brian was born in Waltham on December 1, 1943, a son of the late Thomas A. and Dorothy H. (Carney) Roach and had lived in Waltham and in Framingham for several years before moving to Belmont.
After graduating from St. Mary's High School in Waltham he received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Boston State College. Until his retirement Brian taught special education classes in Cambridge for 30 years. Also included in his teaching resume were classes, demonstrations, and critiques given at local art associations and adult education programs.
As an accomplished painter he attributed his influences in the painting craft to master American painters Robert Douglas Hunter and Robert Cormier of Boston. While studying on location with Mr. Hunter, Brian learned how to use the power of light and shadow to effectively record the special time of day that make a painting true to nature. He learned to paint not what the mind knows, but what the eye sees, remaining true to the visual impression. His art work included scenes of the Charles River, the North End and the Boston Public Gardens.
He leaves his children Christopher P. Roach of Washington, D.C. and Kevin D. Roach of San Francisco, California; his sisters and brother Patricia E. Roach of Belmont, M. Kathleen Devin of Quincy and David J. Roach of Framingham; his fiancé, Shavaun M. O'Neill of West Roxbury and many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will honor and remember Brian's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Thursday, February 2nd from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9 a.m. on Friday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Mary's Church, 133 School Street, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.
