Waltham – Mr. Thomas J. Shanley, Jr., of Waltham, died Sunday, October 5, 2014 at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. He was 78.
Tom was born in Boston on October 15, 1935, a son of the late Thomas J., Sr. and Cecelia (O'Keefe) Shanley. He was raised in Watertown where he graduated from Saint Patrick's High School.
On October 28, 1956 he married his sweetheart, Margaret E. 'Betty' Hann, in Saint Patrick's Church and the pair made their home in Watertown before moving to Waltham in 1970 where they have been residents since.
Tom worked for years as a store manager for the Stop & Shop Company before becoming a specialty food broker with Bostonian Foods/SWB New England.
Time spent with his family was precious to Tom with whom he shared his passion for trains and Bruins hockey.
In addition to his beloved wife of fifty-seven years, Betty, he leaves his children, Thomas J. Shanley, III of Londonderry, New Hampshire, Nancy Brown, Karen Alosso, Michael Shanley and Robert Shanley, all of Waltham; 9 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandson.
Family and friends will honor and remember Tom's life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Thursday, October 9th from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 10 a.m. on Friday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Patrick's Church, 212 Main Street, Watertown where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Saint Patrick's Cemetery, Watertown.
