Weston - Mrs. Verna A. Hemphill, of Weston, formerly of Waltham and Falmouthport, Cape Cod died Saturday, March 19, 2011 at Sunrise Senior Living of Weston. She was 95.
Verna was born in Waltham on February 8, 1916, a daughter of the late Harry L. and Laura (Campbell) Anderson of 90 Fiske Street. She graduated from Waltham High School’s Class of 1934. While at the Perkins School, she would often be visited by her many grandchildren, who recall fondly the times during winter months, when they’d be hoisted through a first floor window with wet snow boots to visit Verna and J. Stephenson Hemphill for mints. While living at Cape Cod, Verna’s specialty was baking cookies, which were appreciated by all at family gatherings.
Her husband, J. Stephenson Hemphill died May 12, 1987. She was predeceased by her step-children, Sue H. Gardner and J. Stephenson Hemphill Jr.; her siblings, Gordon F. Anderson, Barbara L. Russell and Lorraine Crabtree.
She leaves seven grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Family and friends will gather in the Chapel at the Joyce Funeral Home in Waltham on Saturday, March 26th at 10:30 a.m. where her life will be remembered. Burial will follow at Mount Feake Cemetery in Waltham.
