Lexington – Mrs. Verona M. (Shipman) Peters, of Lexington, formerly of Waltham, died unexpectedly at home on Tuesday, October 27, 2015. She was 86.
Born on February 22, 1929 in Nottingham, England, 'Rona' was the daughter of the late William Winston Shipman and Doris (Saunderson) Shipman. Raised and educated in Nottingham, England, she married Dr. Alan Peters on September 30, 1955. They lived in Edinburgh, Scotland for several years before Alan's appointment as chairman of the Department of Anatomy at Boston University brought them to the United States in 1966. They settled in Waltham before moving to Lexington in 2006.
Rona loved people and enjoyed entertaining. Never one to sit still, she played tennis and would often be found in her garden. She was a commissioner in the British Girl Guides and was involved in the Girl Scouts when she came to America. Her hobbies included sewing and knitting and she helped Waltham's Reagle Players troupe make their costumes.
She and Alan traveled extensively, but were happiest at their lake home in Ashburnham. She was always interested in politics, especially locally. Rona was a member of the League of Women Voters in Waltham and for several years served as president. She was a volunteer at the Waltham Police Department for over twenty years and was a member of the Charles River Watershed Association.
In addition to her husband of sixty years, Alan, she leaves her daughters, Ann V. Allison of Belmont and Susan C. Shaw and her husband, James of Waltham; her grandchildren, Margot and Benjamin Allison and Peter Shaw and her great-grandson, Ethan Allison. A third daughter, Sally E. Peters, died in 2006.
Family and friends will celebrate and remember Verona's life by gathering from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday morning, November 7th in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Feake Cemetery.
