Mrs. Veronica M. "Rhona" (Burke) Boyd, of Waltham, died Sunday, February 5, 2023 in her home. She was 97.
Rhona was born in Athlone, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on July 2, 1925, a daughter of the late Mary Kate (Dolan) and Thaddeus “Ted” Burke. As a young girl she moved with her family to the United States settling in Waltham. She was a graduate of Saint Charles High School.
She worked her entire life, first as a 'candy girl' at the Embassy Theatre on Moody Street and later, for more than forty years, in the office at Grover Cronin's Department Store. Following the store's closure Rhona volunteered at Waltham Hospital.
She was a devoted wife and mother and was a longtime member of the Peggy McGlone Dance Studio where she made many lifelong friendships.
In addition to her husband, the late Richard H. Boyd, she was predeceased by her sisters, Kathleen Wilson, Joan Burke and Mary McManus.
She leaves her children, Carol A. McMahon (Brian), Barbara M. Boyd and Mary K. Boyd, all of Waltham and Margaret J. ‘Peggy’ Baranowski (Conrad) of Nashua, New Hampshire; her grandchildren, Kevin McMahon (Tracy), Timothy McMahon (Ashley), Diana Seremet (Emil) and Stephanie Cormier (Shawn); her great-grandchildren, Declan, Bennett, Eleanor, Fiona and Teddy McMahon; her brother, John Burke of Waltham; and is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will honor and remember Rhona’s life by gathering to visit on Wednesday, February 8th from 10:30 a.m. until 12 p.m. in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20) Waltham followed by her funeral service at 12 noon. Burial will be in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham.
