Manchester, NH - Mary Virginia (Gill) Delorey, a resident of Manchester, New Hampshire, and a former long-time resident of Waltham, died August 16, 2010, after a brief illness. She was born in Waltham on August 4, 1917, a daughter of the late Robert Emmett Gill and Ann L. (MacGowan) Gill.
Her father was the fifth generation owner of the former Gill Monument business in Waltham. Mrs. Delorey graduated from St. Mary’s High School and then graduated from Burdett College, majoring in English. After graduating from Burdett, Mrs. Delorey worked as the personnel manager at the Waltham Screw Company. After being stricken with polio, she started her own home-based babysitting service which she ran for many years. After she regained her ability to walk, she worked for Pace Services in Waltham.
She enjoyed many summers with her family at her second home on a pond in Plymouth, MA. Mrs. Delorey was a genealogist and loved writing poems, shopping, sending letters to dear friends and family and spending time with her family. She also authored many verses under contract for Hallmark cards and was an avid typist. She enjoyed playing games with her family and teaching them to her grandchildren. Some of her favorites were Scrabble and poker. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church while living in Waltham. Her Catholic faith was very important to her.
She was predeceased by her husband of 40 years, David who died in 1981. She later remarried to William Lamb at age 71 in 1987. Mr. Lamb passed away in 1998.
Family members include two sons, David F. Delorey, Jr., and his wife, Jacquelyn (Bishop) Delorey, of Francistown New Hampshire and Kevin P. Delorey of Nashua, New Hampshire; her daughter, Valerie (Delorey) Pellegrino, of Merrimack New Hampshire; and her grandchildren, Jeremy, Jill and Jonathan Delorey, Jason Walsh, Kimberly (Walsh) Warenda, Katelyn (Delorey) Smith; her step-grandchildren, Karen Durost and Steve Pellegrino; her great-grandchildren Aaron and Tyler Delorey, Kyre and Lilly Walsh and Alexander Smith and her step-great-grandchildren, Eathan Durost, Claire and Kelly Pellegrino.
Family and friends will honor and remember Virginia’s life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte.20), Waltham on Wednesday from 6:00 p.m to 8:00 p.m. and again on Thursday morning at 11:00 a.m. when her funeral service will be held. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
