Walter S. Scott

December 1, 1943 — January 3, 2025

Waltham

Walter S. Scott, of Waltham, passed away unexpectedly but peacefully, surrounded by family, on Friday, January 3, 2025, at Newton Wellesley Hospital. He was 81.

Born on December 1, 1943, Walter was the son of Walter and Isabel (Beggs) Scott. He was raised and educated in Winchester, where he graduated from Winchester High School. Pursuing his passion for engineering, Walter earned his degree from Wentworth Institute of Technology. Following his formal education, he served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and upon his discharge, he began his career as a civil engineer for the city of Waltham, serving his community for many years until his retirement in 2004. Always looking to stay busy, he enjoyed his retirement job, working an additional 20 years at The Home Depot. He was also a volunteer and auxiliary firefighter in Winchester and Cambridge in his younger days.

Walter married the love of his life, Waltham native Nancy Suter in 1972 and the couple moved to the Warrendale neighborhood of Waltham in 1975 where they would raise their children and have called it home since. Walter was a good provider, a loving husband and a great dad. His boys recall him always being there to take them to every sports game and staying to cheer them on, followed by dad jokes all the way home. The family also made many happy memories on summer vacations to York and Hampton Beach, as well as Bridgton, Maine. And he was always up for a good day of shopping with Nancy.

For Walter, relaxing didn’t mean sitting still, he was always working on something. He enjoyed woodworking, eating his favorite American Chop Suey, and had a passion for photography that began during his military service in Europe. One of his favorite pastimes, stemming from his time as a volunteer firefighter, was listening to the fire and police scanner in the car, and if the call was nearby, you might find him looking to capture it with his camera. He also loved coffee from Dunkin’ Donuts, lottery scratch-offs, and quiet games of solitaire. Walter was hard-working, organized, regimented, but most importantly, one of the nicest guys around.

In addition to his wife, Nancy C. (Suter) Scott of Waltham, he leaves his children Gregg Scott of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire and Geoff Scott (Leanne) of Framingham; his grandson Joshua Scott and many nieces and nephews.

Walter was predeceased by his siblings, Susan Thompson, Richard Harvey, Ken Harvey, and Sarah Bursey.

Family and friends will honor and remember Walter’s life by gathering at the Joyce funeral home at 245 Main St. in Waltham on Sunday, January 12, 2025 from 12 to 2 PM concluding with his funeral service at 2 PM. Burial will be held privately at a later date.
